In addition, she was the vocalist in a popular USA nationwide television commercial for Target, which featured a cover of the song “(So Groovy) Reach Out of the Darkness”.
We had the opportunity to chat with Jocelyn about her new single “Sweetheart”, what it’s like to have your music featured in popular TV shows, and who she’d love to work with next.
Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your new single “Sweetheart”?
Jocelyn: I gotta be honest… I wrote this song originally for Zara Larsson! But I also gotta be honest that the whole time I was writing it I knew I was gonna keep it no matter what. This song feels really powerful, especially coming from a woman. It’s a light hearted song about being out with your girls and needing that space from your partner. At its heart, this song is about self love.
Kat: You’ve amassed over 100 million streams across all streaming platforms, and have had your work featured on hit TV shows which include Pretty Little Liars and One Tree Hill. What have you learned from those experiences? and how do you think those experiences affected you as an artist?
Jocelyn: Holy shit. Every time I’m told that number I’m blown away. I think it’s important to have some wins along the way. It’s really hard to be an artist and an entrepreneur. Those wins gave me more confidence and assured me that what I was doing was connecting, because for me as a writer and singer, that’s my job. If I’m not connecting my heart to others I really don’t get the point. I have always just wanted to make really honest, vulnerable music and I think it’s really interesting that all of my biggest successes have come from those songs.
Kat: Is there a moment that has stood out as a career highlight for you so far?
Jocelyn: Probably the craziest moment of my life so far was receiving my Socan award in Canada. The night itself was a dream come true. To stand with all of my other artist superheros and enjoy this night that was all about honouring our work was an honour itself. The craziest part tho was not only seeing Lennon & Maisy perform but then having THEM come up to me ME and tell me they were fans. I mean…. I’m the fan!!! It’s been really cool to see how I’ve affected other artists. That’s really surreal.
Kat: Is there an artist you’d like to perform with, that you haven’t had the chance to yet. Or a song you’d love to do a cover of?
Jocelyn: Rihanna is the absolute Queen of my soul. I also really love Bon Iver. I think we could do something super weird and vibey.
Kat: Do you have any advice for emerging artists, or for those trying to break into the entertainment industry?
Jocelyn: Don’t forget why you do it. There’s so much bullshit and so many bullies trying to tell you who to be. Fuck them. Listen to your gut and make music and business decisions from there. I really believe if your intention is to help and heal, the rest will take care of itself. Buckle up, it’s a wild ride.
