Award-winning Canadian hip-hop artist, author, and motivational speaker D.O. Gibson marks a new chapter in his career with the release of his latest single, “Learned From The Greatest,” featuring O’Sound out via Believe Digital. The release kicked off a multi-phase national rollout that included a Canada-wide school and community tour.

“Learned From The Greatest” is inspired by legendary figures across hip-hop, sports, and culture—individuals who achieved excellence through discipline, resilience, and relentless practice. Known internationally for his elite freestyle ability, including holding a Guinness World Record for the longest continuous freestyle, Gibson uses the track to reflect on the mentors, moments, and mindset that shaped his journey. Blending classic hip-hop foundations with a modern motivational edge, the song reinforces a core philosophy that has defined Gibson’s work for over two decades: success leaves clues.

The single also serves as the thematic foundation for the Learned From The Greatest Tour, which saw Gibson return to schools and community venues across Canada. The tour coincides with Gibson’s 25th year delivering performances through his acclaimed Stay Driven program. Since launching the initiative in 2001, Gibson has performed more than 4,000 school shows, reaching hundreds of thousands of students nationwide. Each stop combines live hip-hop performance, storytelling, and interactive discussion focused on leadership, perseverance, anti-bullying, and self-belief.

Together, the single and tour form a unified body of work that reflects D.O. Gibson’s evolution as both an artist and motivational speaker, while remaining deeply rooted in the culture that shaped him.

I had the opportunity to chat with D.O about his new single, building a legacy and what’s next.

Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your latest single “Learned From The Greatest”?

D.O: “Learned From The Greatest” came from a place of reflection. I’ve been doing this a long time now, and at a certain point you stop chasing validation and start thinking about lineage. I’ve been fortunate to learn from elders, mentors, artists, athletes, and everyday people who showed me what discipline, humility, and consistency really look like. This song is me acknowledging that none of us get here alone — and that wisdom is passed, not invented.

Kat: What do you hope fans take from the single?

D.O: I hope people hear their own journey in it. Whether you’re at the beginning, in the middle, or reinventing yourself, I want the song to remind you that your lessons matter — and that learning never stops. It’s also a reminder to honour the people who poured into you, and to be intentional about who you’re learning from moving forward.

Kat: What do you find is the most challenging part of your creative process?

D.O: The hardest part is protecting the quiet. Creativity doesn’t happen on demand — it needs space. Between touring, business, parenting, and life, I have to be very intentional about slowing down enough to actually feel something worth writing about. When I get that balance right, everything flows. When I don’t, I feel it immediately.

Kat: What has been a career highlight for you so far? What have you learned along the way?

D.O: One major highlight has been performing for tens of thousands of students across the country and seeing the impact in real time. Holding a Guinness World Record, releasing albums, touring internationally — all of that is meaningful. But what I’ve learned is that longevity beats moments. Staying grounded, staying healthy, and staying curious has mattered more than any single achievement.

Kat: What’s next for you?

D.O: I’m in a really focused chapter right now. New music, a book called In The Flow Zone, a national tour, and continuing to build platforms like Black Canadian 365. I’m thinking long-term — about legacy, ownership, and impact. The goal isn’t just to create — it’s to leave something useful behind.
