Rising Canadian indie pop-rock duo, The Manic Boys And Girls Club recently released their compelling new single, “Sorry” on June 7th via all streaming platforms.

In support of the single release, the band will be performing at The Rivoli in Toronto on June 21st as part of NXNE. July sees them head overseas to Portugal for a nine-date tour to promote their new music internationally and take audiences on an eclectic journey as the band performs ambient, intimate versions of their songs.

“Sorry” is a slow, emotional track that serves as a poignant escape from reality and further showcases the duo’s ability to captivate listeners with raw, evocative storytelling set against a backdrop of lush instrumentation.

Hailing from Toronto, The Manic Boys and Girls Club is composed of siblings Bela and Fernando Ferreira. With a dynamic blend of lush synthesizers and overdriven guitars, their music serves as a captivating escape from societal norms and submissive existence, inviting listeners into a world of authenticity and rebellion.

The band had a recent win for Video of the Year Award at the International Portuguese Music Awards for their single “We’ll Be Fine,” and are rapidly building a devoted fanbase drawn to their evocative storytelling and electrifying performances, solidifying their impact in the music scene.

I had the opportunity to chat with Fernando Ferreira about the duo’s musical journey, their new single and what’s next.

Kat: Can you share with us a bit about yourself and your musical journey so far?

Fernando: I’m one of three musician kids in an otherwise non musical family. I imagine this started as a seemingly harmless idea. A temporary phase to keep your kids busy and out of trouble. My parents now realize they are responsible for a lot more than they had ever imagined.

Even though we’re pretty fresh, The Manic Boys And Girls Club is really the same band we started as kids in our parents’ living room.

Kat: Can you share the inspiration behind your new single “Sorry”?

Fernando: Sorry is a love song.

More specifically, an apology for sabotaging something that is perfectly healthy for no other reason than just a desire for newness. It’s about a self destructive nature. The regret. If you’ve ever wondered what you did wrong, what you said, or what happened… Sometimes the answer really is “Nothing”.

Kat: What do you hope fans take away from the single?

Fernando: I don’t really feel like either of us is in a position to give any advice, but if you take anything away from Sorry, I hope it’s the lyric, “We can make the wrong things right”. We’re all flawed, and that’s ok.

Kat: What do you find is the most challenging part of your creative process?

Fernando: The most challenging part of the process is reaching  the point of introducing a producer or engineer to the room. That is the first time someone besides myself and my sister has any input or even exposure to our music. We are super particular of who we work with, and have yet to co-write any of our music with anyone. I am very aware I’m not the easiest person to work with in the studio. But even when it seems like I want to kill you,  if you’re in the room, I must really love you.

Kat: What has been a career highlight for you so far?

Fernando: We just won Music Video Of The Year at The International Portuguese Music Awards. This award was for our single “We’ll Be Fine”. A video made in two days, one actor, two crew. No lighting. No permits. No makeup. No special effects. Nothing to lean on but a simple idea and our creativity. Being of Portuguese descent and having so much talent throughout the world, makes this a pretty massive honour to even be nominated, let alone win. Feels like we are off to a good start looking forward to the release of our EP.

Kat: What have you learned along the way? Do you have any advice that you would like to share with other aspiring artists and creators?

Fernando: I’m still learning, but what feels right to me is is to not look sideways, not care about what anyone else is doing, and making music I love. One thing I know is there are highs and the lowest lows…. But man, the high is totally worth it.

Kat: What else can fans expect from you for the balance of 2024?

Fernando: We have a hometown show in Toronto on June 21st, then we go off to Europe for a tour of record shops through July. These will be intimate, more ambient interpretations of our music.

We’re back for some U.S. and Canadian dates late summer into the fall.

Through it all, we’ll be documenting and live streaming a lot of our touring on social media.

We’re a live band. Whether at The Manic Boys And Girls Club’s show, or with us online, the human connections we make are such a special part of what we do.

If our path’s cross somewhere on the road or at a venue, you just may be part of the inspiration for the music to come.
