Sam Drysdale Talks Latest Single “Dream About A Girl”

Kat Harlton

Slaight Music singer-songwriter Sam Drysdale, recently released his new single ‘Dream About a Girl‘ on August 25 via Cadence Recordings/Ingrooves and all streaming platforms. The new single showcases Sam’s captivating vocals in a mellow track about dreaming of a girl you can’t seem to forget even after waking up.

Born in Kitchener-Waterloo, ON, and raised in Guelph, ON, Sam was influenced by his musical family from a young age who exposed him to all kinds of artists from Bruce Springsteen to Pink Floyd. He moved to Los Angeles at 17 to attend the Musicians Institute, and later moved to Nashville at the age 21, where he collaborated with established producer-songwriters Davor Jordanovski and Paul Brown on a six track EP entitled The Fight.

Two months into the EP release, one of the tracks, “Dear Jane”, was anonymously submitted to Slaight Music’s annual It’s Your Shot competition, where he won first place, and furthered connections with the Slaight team. Sam relocated to Toronto, ON, where he continued to release more music, including his second EP, Vicelove, produced by Thomas “Tawgs” Salter (Lights, Walk Off The Earth, Scott Helman).

We had the opportunity to chat with Sam about ‘Dream About A Girl’, his creative process and what he hopes fans connect with on the song.

Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your latest single ‘Dream About A Girl’?

Sam: “Dream About A Girl” was inspired by exactly that, a dream. The song is about the slow decay of a real relationship to a degree where one party is quite literally finding peace in dreaming about someone they’ve never met. The idea of the song is to articulate how those feelings of hopelessness can creep in and show themselves in the smallest ways, especially in the subconscious.

Kat: What do you hope fans take from the song?

Sam: I hope it can be one of those rare songs that acts as both a bit of a bop, but can also be played late at night while you’re alone in your headphones. We tried to achieve some sense of dreaminess in the production and I always encourage people to listen to music through some good speakers. This is a new era for us, and I hope the song provides a good reintroduction.

Kat: What do you find is the most challenging part of your creative process?

Sam: The production. Once I have a song fully written and it exists as this pure entity, it’s often really scary for me to start dressing it up in different outfits. Except it’s not even as simple as that because it’s not like you can easily try something on and then just take it off….you start to get attached to things and your baseline bias gets swayed. If it doesn’t come naturally and easily, production can be a bit of a tightrope.

Kat: What has been a career highlight for you so far? What have you learned along the way?

Sam: The release party for my first EP “Vicelove” was incredibly special. We sold out The Mod Club in Toronto and threw a pretty fun party during game 4 of The Raptors’ championship run. That said, I think staring down the barrel of this next project has been my biggest highlight. Everything we’ve pieced together for this next release has my paws all over it and I’m really proud of that. On a more personal note – meeting one of my best friends and creative collaborator Helder Matias would definitely be up there as well. Wouldn’t be anywhere without him.

Kat: What’s next?

Sam: We’ve got a new era up our sleeves, and I’m really looking forward to inviting everyone in for a drink. The music is better. The visuals are better. The vision is more realized in every way and I can’t wait to share it.
