On Saturday September 21, Heart Attack Kids played at the first ever Battle Rock at Toronto’s Hard Luck Bar, a unique event with bands and wrestling. The whole event was an amazing time and hosted by the hilarious Toronto drag performer The Ugly One.
Founded in London in 2013, Heart Attack Kids play a gritty and aggressive blend of garage rock and punk. They have such a massive sound that you won’t believe until you see it that they are only a duo. Vocalist and guitarist Jared Ellul worked the stage and the crowd fed off his energy and Lor kept the beat driving along with her drums. Together, the two of them made rock and roll magic. The band has been touring extensively for the last few years and this gig was their last night of their most recent tour that began on the east coast. Yet, even though it was their final night of their tour, they still rocked it like it was their first, bringing all the energy they possibly could to the stage.
Off stage, Jared and Lor could not be nicer people. Both were incredibly approachable before and after their set. The crowd really got into the music: moshing and having an overall great time. It reminded me in all the best ways of the local shows I used to go to as a teenager in my hometown. Large stadium concerts are great, don’t get me wrong, but there’s just something about smaller venues where you can actually approach and chat with the band afterwards that is so much better. Honestly, it was one of the best concerts I have ever been to.
If you haven’t already, I recommend checking out Heart Attack Kids’ latest release, Bad Luck Like Gold. And I definitely recommend you try to make it out to one of their concerts at some point because you won’t be disappointed.
