This Alberta-based band is out to turn the tables on the country music world and show the guys that they can rock—and party—just as hard. Sure, there are plenty of strong female country artists in Daisy Dukes out there, but try to name another self-contained unit that plays their own instruments and writes songs as potent as “Jim, Jack, Johnnie & Jose,” the new feminist anthem “Mansplainin’” and the band’s current roof-raising single “Pony Up.” The bottom line is that if you’re looking for a good time, then Nice Horse is more than willing to take you along for the ride.

5 Holiday Favorites With(1)

We caught up with Katie from Nice Horse to find out her favorite holiday memory, her favorite Christmas gift and the country Christmas song she can’t live without.

Kat: Do you have a favorite holiday or Christmas memory?
Katie: My mom always made Christmas so much fun. From sleigh rides with the horses, watching Christmas movies together. I always loved Christmas eve just as much as Christmas morning, it just felt so magical. My sister and I could never fall asleep, so we’d get up in the middle of the night and try sneaking out to see what presents had been put under the tree. I am pretty sure my parents knew we did it, but they never stopped us.

Kat: Favorite holiday movie?
Katie: Love Actually…and Elf. When I was a kid I think my favourite was Prancer (with Sam Elliott).

Kat: What was your favorite gift you received as a kid?
Katie: I remember getting my first stereo, it was yellow and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I also always got a CD or 2 in my stocking and I loved getting those.

Kat: Favorite holiday song?
Katie: Christmas (baby please come home), the Darlene Love version. And of course All I Want For Christmas is You by Mariah Carey, Hard Candy Christmas by Dolly Parton.

Kat: Favorite holiday treat?
Katie: I actually don’t have much of a sweet tooth. But I think Christmas dinner is my favourite meal of the year.
