Canadian country artist Annika Catharina is celebrating the recent release of her single “Love and Hate”.
To date, “Love and Hate” has garnered over 175K Spotify streams as well as spots on the “North Country” and “Country Frontier” editorial playlists. Annika also marked its release as the cover artist of Amazon Music’s “Poppin’ Country” editorial playlist to go with placements on“ Just North of Nashville” and “Breakthrough Country”. Not to be outdone, she also made the cover of Apple Music’s “Canada’s Country” while the single also placed on “Today’s Country”, “New in Country”, “Today’s Country–Best of 2024” and “Canada’s Country–Best of 2024”.
Written by Annika along with Parker Graye and the song’s producers The Renaissance (Dan Botch and Garrett Ward),“Love and Hate” is the third single of 2024 for the rising country artist out of Abbotsford, British Columbia. “Love and Hate” kicks off with an energetic guitar riff that slides into the song’s trademark drum beat to accompany Annika’s fiery vocal exploration of a tumultuous relationship
Annika’s exciting ascent in country music is a poignant testament to her own perseverance after a devastating accident and facial reconstruction surgery initially sidelined her musical pursuits as a young adult.
Since making the decision to continue forward, Annika is now basking in the light of her glowing country soul and poised to win more hearts with her latest single.
I had the opportunity to chat with Annika Catharina about her new single release, her musical journey and more.
\Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your latest single, “Love and Hate”?
Annika: When I was younger, I was in a relationship that felt like we were always caught between moments of everything feeling great and times when nothing made sense, which wasn’t good. We were young, and the maturity of the relationship played a part in it. However, I still remember the intense feeling of “love and hate” and the constant cycle of fighting and almost forgetting what you fought about, then back to everything being okay. A friend recently shared some of her frustrations about a relationship that reminded me of the past. I remember how confusing the relationship was and could relate with what they were going through.
Sometimes, on paper, two people seem perfect; perhaps, sometimes, people are too much alike or simply met at the wrong time. It made me wonder why relationships end up this way. After thinking about the idea, I grabbed my guitar. I started writing the pre-chorus.”one too many times where we both crossed a line,” After working on the idea I brought the song and melody to the Renaissance (Dan Botch and Garrett Ward), then finished writing and working out the concept with Parker Graye, Dan and Garrett.
Kat: What do you hope fans take from the track?
Annika: The song is energetic and upbeat. However, it highlights the ups and downs of relationships. Sometimes, when faced with relationship challenges, people can work it out. In other relationships, there is a constant cycle of going back and forth, loving and hating. This song highlights the complexities of love and the challenges we face when our emotions get tangled up with each other.
Kat: What do you find is the most challenging part of your creative process?
Annika: The creative process is so rewarding but of course it also comes with challenging moments.
In my case, a big struggle of mine is over-perfecting. I can get frustrated and feel stuck when I get caught up with needing everything to be flawless. When this happens, those feelings can overshadow my own creativity.
I’ll also feel like sometimes the music I’ve created isn’t good enough, which leads to self-doubt, especially when I start comparing myself with others.
To push through this, I focus on being inspired. It’s everywhere and it’s beautiful. It could be a conversation with someone, a walk outside, or artwork. There is inspiration in so many aspects of life and that fuels my passion.
So I embrace these challenges by finding the beauty in inspiration, and just keep creating from there, even if it gets tough sometimes.
Kat: What has been a career highlight for you so far? What have you learned along the way?
Annika: This past year has been filled with incredible highs in my career. I have had the amazing opportunity to record, write, and perform alongside some of my favorite artists, which made the creative process even better.
If I had to pick one, especially recently, it would be that my last single “Bandit” hit #1 on SiriusXM Top of the Country twice this fall!.
I also had other standout moments for my first single of 2024, “What If I”, which became a finalist in the Unsigned Only songwriting contest and reached #2 on the SiriusXM Top of Country charts.
Knowing that my music resonated with so many people has been an incredible feeling and truly highlights the joy of creating it.
Kat: What’s next?
Annika: Besides the single, I’ve released my music video for “Love and Hate,” filmed and directed by my good friend Max Chadwick.
I just finished a Christmas cover of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”, which is one of my favourite Christmas songs that I’m so happy to share.
Early next year, I have another single coming out called “Dishonest” and a few show announcements that I can’t wait to share. Until then, I am working on writing and curating a list of songs that will go on an EP that will be released in 2025!
