We had the opportunity to chat with Sam, whose voice will intertwine with the orchestra, bringing the music to life.
Kat: How did you feel when you first heard that you’d be performing in the Twilight movie concert series?
Sam: Ever since I was a little kid I always loved major movie franchises like Twilight, Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings, and Pirates of The Caribbean. I always wanted to be part of those worlds in some way but I assumed it was never going to happen. So when the opportunity came to sing in Twilight in Concert it felt like a dream had come true.
Kat: The Twilight saga is known for its emotional and atmospheric soundtrack. How do you approach capturing that unique blend of longing, passion, and mystery in your performance?
Sam: I’ve been a fan of all the Twilight movies and of their soundtracks for years. They have a visual and sound aesthetic that immediately resonated with me as a child. It was an atmosphere that I had never experienced before and was so different from the other movies I saw at the time and from the mainstream songs I heard on the radio. I was never someone who felt in touch with the mainstream so Twilight and its whole musical world felt like a secret escape for me. I would say that I approach my performance of this music in the same way. It comes from a very personal and introverted place. My goal is to convey in my performance the way the movie makes me feel when I watch it.
Kat: Which iconic Twilight song resonates with you the most, and why?
Sam: There are lots of songs that I love across the whole franchise but I love that as soon as I hear Full Moon by The Black Ghosts I am immediately transported to the state of Washington, under a near constant cover of clouds and rain, to a small town named Forks. Population, 3,120 people. That’s where the song takes me.
Kat: If you could collaborate with any other artist (living or not) to perform a Twilight-inspired duet, who would it be and why?
Sam: Easy! Lana Del Rey. Lana is my favorite artist and for me she would perfectly capture the Twilight aesthetic.
Kat: If you had to choose a supernatural creature from the Twilight universe to be for a day, which one would it be?
Sam: A vampire, no question. I used to pretend I was a vampire from Twilight as a game when I was a kid actually. My favorite was Caius from the Volturi because I thought he was fabulous with his blonde hair and dark robes… and the power. Don’t forget the power.
Kat: How do you balance staying true to the original soundtrack while infusing your own style into the performances?
Sam: This soundtrack has many different styles from pop to rock to folk, which are sung in all different vocal registers so it presents quite a challenge for the soloist. What’s most important for me is to convey the emotion of the singers from the original soundtrack through my performance. Our voices may be different but my hope is that the mood will be the same.
Kat: Lastly, if you were to describe the Twilight concert series in three words, what would they be?
Sam: Rainy. Romantic. Cozy.
