I had the opportunity to chat with Beppie about her musical journey, her new single and what’s next.
Kat: Can you share with us a bit about Beppie and your music journey so far?
Beppie: I’ve been a musician and music educator for over 20 years but my journey into making children’s music as Beppie began 10 years ago. I was teaching preschool music classes and developing a custom curriculum for them. As I was searching for music to use in the lessons I found myself creating music that would teach certain skills and elements. I loved this process so much! I was able to explore so many styles and incorporate humour and storytelling. The families I was teaching asked me if they could listen to the music at home, which inspired me to record it. So I teamed up with a producer, Justin McDonough, to get to work and 10 years later we have 6 albums, 2 JUNO nominations, and a Western Canadian Music Award.
Kat: Can you share the inspiration behind your new single “Reset”?
Beppie: I work with kids all the time. I’m also a mom of three young children. I noticed that I was repeating a message of mindfulness and positivity on a regular basis. That’s what “Reset” is about. Shifting your mindset, taking a break, picking a pace. “Reset” encourages us all to stop and recharge before we get burned out. It’s a rock anthem that promotes the power of positivity through the magic of music.
Kat: What do you hope fans connect with from the song?
Beppie: I hope that this song is a fun way to get listeners to make their well-being a priority. The project, homework, and the chores can wait. Your health and state of mind are more important. When we get stuck or overwhelmed by everything we have to do, it’s ok to take a break, to move and fuel your body. After watching my own kids get anxious over uncompleted tasks, I specifically wanted them to know that they don’t need to feel guilty about taking care of themselves before they take care of anything else.
Kat: What do you find is the most challenging part of your creative process?
Beppie: The creative process itself, the writing, story telling, the ideas, that’s always been my favourite part. I get to write songs about space tomatoes and dancing dinosaurs. It’s a ton of fun. The challenge for me is the part that comes after the music is created. The marketing and promotion part. Luckily I’m at a point where I have a small team that supports me in this work. It’s hard to be an expert at every aspect of music creation. I love to focus on the art and connecting with kids and let experts come in and guide me through the other areas of the process.
Kat: What has been a career highlight for you so far?
Beppie: This is an excellent question! This entire past year was a highlight for me. I was honoured to receive the Edmonton Arts Trust Fund Award, I received my second JUNO nomination, and I won a Western Canadian Music Award for Children’s Artist of the Year. I was also a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. So 2023 was just a giant highlight reel for me.
Kat: What have you learned along the way? What you would like to share with other aspiring artists and creators?
Beppie: Keep going. Working in the arts can be so tough. You never know if the investment will pay off, if people will like your work, or if you will be able to accomplish what you set out to do. But if you stop, you’ll be depriving yourself of the gift of making art. That’s what it’s all about. Focus on the art. Enjoy the process of creation and exploration, ride the waves of the process, and don’t quit.
Kat: What else can fans expect from you for the balance of 2024?
Beppie: 2024 is going to be a big year! I have a new single coming out on March 29th (Reset), a new album dropping on April 12th (also named Reset), and an illustrated children’s book, The Cookie Pirate, coming out on April 23rd! I’ve also got a new music video in the works. I’ve been busy creating for the past year and half so everything that I’ve been working on will finally be ready to share with the world this year.
