The first recipient of the YOU DO YOU Foundation Artist Grant, Brayo Bryans is an aspiring singer-songwriter and human rights activist from Uganda, East Africa. While in Uganda Brayo co-founded an organization that advocates for the rights of 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and also co-founded TUK (Talented Ugandan Kuchus), a group of talented 2SLGBTQIA+ artists used performing arts to sensitize LGBT issues in Uganda.
Brayo organized an event with TUK, which was raided and shut down by the Ugandan police. Several years later Brayo had to flee Uganda and seek refuge in Canada away from persecution in his home country.
So Fierce’s YOU DO YOU Foundation has provided Bryans with financial and musical support for his upcoming EP. Brayo’s first single with So Fierce Music, “Break The Spell” was recently released on June 16th.

I had the opportunity to chat with Brayo Bryans about his musical journey so far, what he’s learned along the way, and what’s next.
Kat: Can you share with us a bit about yourself and your music journey so far?
Brayo: Thank you for having me. My name is Brayo Bryans, and I’m an artist and activist dedicated to promoting equality and human rights. Originally from Uganda, East Africa, I have been on a journey of using music as a powerful tool for advocacy and empowerment. From organizing pride celebrations in Uganda to co-founding organizations like Icebreakers Uganda (IBU) and Talented Ugandan Kuchus (TUK), my work has revolved around fostering acceptance and understanding within the LGBTQ+ community. Music has always been at the heart of my activism, allowing me to create positive change through storytelling and raising awareness. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my experiences and passion through my music.
Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your new single “Break The Spell” released via So Fierce Music?
Brayo: “Break The Spell” is a song that holds deep personal meaning for me. It was inspired by my journey of self-discovery and the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community. The song is about breaking free from societal limitations, embracing our authentic selves, and finding the strength to overcome obstacles. It speaks to the universal human experience of feeling lost and uncertain, but also to the power we hold within ourselves to rise above and love who we are. It’s a celebration of individuality and a call for empowerment and self-acceptance. Collaborating with SO Fierce Music has been an incredible experience, as they share my commitment to inclusivity and using music as a platform for positive change.
Kat: What do you hope fans connect with from the new track?
Brayo: My hope is that “Break The Spell” resonates deeply with listeners and serves as an anthem of empowerment and self-belief. I want fans to feel inspired to break free from any self-doubt or societal expectations that hold them back and to embrace their true selves. I hope the song ignites a sense of courage and encourages individuals to pursue their dreams and passions without fear. Ultimately, I want fans to find strength in their own unique qualities and celebrate the power of self-acceptance and love.
Kat: What has been a career highlight for you so far, and what have you learned along the way that you would like to share with other aspiring artists and creators?
Brayo: One of the significant career highlights for me has been receiving the YOU DO YOU Foundation Artist Grant, which recognized not only my musical abilities but also my dedication to advocating for LGBTQ+ creatives and marginalized communities. This honor has reinforced the importance of using my platform to uplift others and create positive change. Along my journey, I’ve learned the power of collaboration and the importance of staying true to myself and my values. It’s crucial for aspiring artists and creators to find their authentic voice, embrace their uniqueness, and use their art to make a meaningful impact. Remember that every step forward is an opportunity to learn, grow, and inspire others.
Kat: What else are you currently working on now, and what can we expect from you for the balance of 2023?
Brayo: I’m currently working on several exciting projects. Alongside promoting “Break The Spell,” I am preparing for my performance at the So Fierce and Fabulous Pride Ball 2023, where I will be debuting the song live for the first time. I’m also working on new music, exploring different genres and styles that reflect my journey and experiences. Additionally, I am collaborating with various organizations to continue advocating for equality and human rights, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. For the remainder of 2023, you can expect more music releases, thought-provoking performances, and a continued commitment to using my platform to raise awareness and create positive change. Stay tuned for an exciting journey ahead!
