UK country singer/songwriter Scott Nicholls recently released his latest single “Heartbeat“. After growing up amongst his father’s vinyl collection, submerged in the likes of Tom Petty, Fats Domino and T. Rex, Nicholls picked up the guitar at age 13 and the rest is history.
To date, Nicholls has worked and played with some of the best artists the UK has to offer, in some of the most famous independent venues including The Bedford, The Water Rats, The Troubadour and the Hard Rock Cafe. His music is widely recognized across the globe and has received plenty of spins on national radio stations. In 2020 Nicholls played the online Unlock Festival (NBC Universal), alongside artists like Jimmie Allen and KT Tunstall.

We had the opportunity to chat with Scott about his latest single, what he hopes fans connect with on the track, and what’s next.
Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your latest single “Heartbeat”?
Scott: Heartbeat is one of those songs that just flowed from the beginning. I’d been back in the UK a little while after my divorce and moving home from America and I was just in a weird place wondering how everything could have gone so wrong with this relationship that was really like, full of love at a time. So I decided rather than look back on it and get sad or angry, why not look back and think about when it was pretty great, actually.
Kat: What do you hope fans take from the track?
Scott: That all of these experiences mould us, not only in negative was but positive ones. It’s okay to look back on the redeeming parts of a bad experience. We learn, we grow.
Kat: What do you find is the most challenging part of your creative process?
Scott: Honestly its hard to pinpoint any one part of the process really. I think inspiration is a funny thing and I can absolutely say that during the lockdown here in the UK from March 2020 until… probably Christmas of that year I barely picked up a guitar or wrote songs. I just didn’t feel inspired to even think about it, but slowly surely it came back to me and i’ve really been writing some stuff that I think is the best i’ve ever done so it’s exciting!
Kat: What has been a career highlight for you so far? What have you learned along the way?
Scott: Career highlight for me so far has been invited up on stage by Sonia Leigh to play at her show in London before i’d even released anything actually! She’s an absolute badass, I love her music, and she’s written some amazing songs for other artists too like “Sweet Annie” for Zac Brown Band. Also, being featured in American Songwriter magazine, and being included in an article from Rolling Stone were also pretty huge for me.
Kat: What are your plans for 2021?
Scott: I have been doing a LOT of acting work in 2021 because in the UK we can’t really play shows at the moment because of the COVID19 restrictions that are in place but they’re coming back slowly which we’re all excited about. I think I’ll be releasing just one more song this year and it’s a duet with UK based artist Kezia Gill, but for now I’m just focusing on getting the band back together, writing some music, playing some shows, and moving forward!
