Lacuna J is an independent and self-published artist/songwriter based in Manchester. Like her name, her music is alluring and evocative, referring to herself as genre-fluid, Lacuna J will not be defined to a certain box. Relating more to the stubborn daisies flowering through the cracks in the pavement than to English roses, this songstress is quite simply a force to be reckoned with.Ā
We had the opportunity to chat with Lacuna J about her latest single “Fool (For Loving You)“, her creative process and what’s next.
Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your latest single “Fool (For Loving You)”?
Lacuna: Iād been spectating people I love in toxic relationships. I donāt like to be officious or overstep, ya know? Quite often I donāt express my thoughts or my feelings aloud, so I write them down usually in poem form āthis was part of the inspiration. I guess I wrote the song to let out the frustration hahaha. Iāve also been the person with rose tinted glasses, so it also came from a place of relatability. When you know you were just such a fool (ugh).
Kat: What do you hope fans take from the track?
Lacuna: I hope if someone is in a toxic situation like that, they realize theyāre worth more, so much more. They could also send it to a friend without interfering, hoping their friend will get the message haha.
Kat: What do you find is the most challenging part of your creative process?
Lacuna: I find it hard to stick to one genre/style, because sometimes I donāt feel in a bubblegum pop mood, I feel Lofi pop lol. Iāve had to find a way to stay authentic to myself whilst writing, keeping my songs individual yet still complimentary with one otherā¦if that makes any sense.
Kat: What has been a career highlight for you so far? What have you learned along the way?
Lacuna: Honestly, I think itās the response to my song Taurus. As an independent artist with no financial backing, I canāt believe itās pretty much on half a million streams doing itās own thing lol. Itās me at my most vulnerable and itās really humbling to know itās got such a warm reception. Iāve learned to celebrate the small wins and be grateful for everything Iāve been able to accomplish, itās good to strive toward the future, but itās also just as important to be present and appreciative.
Kat: Whatās next?
Lacuna: I have some more music Iām finishing up at the moment, Iām pretty psyched about them tbh. Iāll probably drop them late summer time. Theyāre very real, but such a vibe. Iād like to collaborate with more other artists this next year, and write for some too. Songwriting is such a huge passion, honestly it makes my heart smile. I have some support gigs lined up for November too āLondon at the O2 Islington on the 2nd of November and YES in Manchester on the 18th of November supporting Lucy Deakin! So things are moving again woop :)
