Lacuna J Talks Latest Single “Fool (For Loving You)”

Kat Harlton

Lacuna J is an independent and self-published artist/songwriter based in Manchester. Like her name, her music is alluring and evocative, referring to herself as genre-fluid, Lacuna J will not be defined to a certain box. Relating more to the stubborn daisies flowering through the cracks in the pavement than to English roses, this songstress is quite simply a force to be reckoned with.

We had the opportunity to chat with Lacuna J about her latest single “Fool (For Loving You)“, her creative process and what’s next.

Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your latest single “Fool (For Loving You)”?

Lacuna: I’d been spectating people I love in toxic relationships. I don’t like to be officious or overstep, ya know? Quite often I don’t express my thoughts or my feelings aloud, so I write them down usually in poem form —this was part of the inspiration. I guess I wrote the song to let out the frustration hahaha. I’ve also been the person with rose tinted glasses, so it also came from a place of relatability. When you know you were just such a fool (ugh).

Kat: What do you hope fans take from the track?

Lacuna: I hope if someone is in a toxic situation like that, they realize they’re worth more, so much more. They could also send it to a friend without interfering, hoping their friend will get the message haha.

Kat: What do you find is the most challenging part of your creative process?

Lacuna: I find it hard to stick to one genre/style, because sometimes I don’t feel in a bubblegum pop mood, I feel Lofi pop lol. I’ve had to find a way to stay authentic to myself whilst writing, keeping my songs individual yet still complimentary with one other…if that makes any sense.

Kat: What has been a career highlight for you so far? What have you learned along the way?

Lacuna: Honestly, I think it’s the response to my song Taurus. As an independent artist with no financial backing, I can’t believe it’s pretty much on half a million streams doing it’s own thing lol. It’s me at my most vulnerable and it’s really humbling to know it’s got such a warm reception. I’ve learned to celebrate the small wins and be grateful for everything I’ve been able to accomplish, it’s good to strive toward the future, but it’s also just as important to be present and appreciative.

Kat: What’s next?

Lacuna: I have some more music I’m finishing up at the moment, I’m pretty psyched about them tbh. I’ll probably drop them late summer time. They’re very real, but such a vibe. I’d like to collaborate with more other artists this next year, and write for some too. Songwriting is such a huge passion, honestly it makes my heart smile. I have some support gigs lined up for November too —London at the O2 Islington on the 2nd of November and YES in Manchester on the 18th of November supporting Lucy Deakin! So things are moving again woop :)
