Nix Talks New Single “Fools”

Kat Harlton

Toronto-born Nix has a dazzling voice that reflects the old and new sounds of pop and R&B.  Having been heavily influenced by 90s-pop divas and old-school crooners, Nix has found her niche with the combination of these two styles. The result is her latest single “Fools” a mixture of soulful pop music packing a punch.

We had the opportunity to chat with Nix about her new single, what she’s learned along the way, and how she’s staying connected.

Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your new single “Fools”?

Nix: I wrote this song pre-COVID19, but I think it’s most relatable right now during this pandemic, when people aren’t going on traditional in-person dates, and our main way of finding love or something casual has been through our phones and computers. “Fools” is about the toxic online dating culture, and how shitty it feels to be ghosted and led on. In terms of the song’s message, I realized one day that enough is enough, and I will no longer let people make me feel like a fool, for their foolish actions.

Kat: Can you talk a little bit about your musical inspirations and role models?

Nix: My role models and musical inspirations are such an eclectic group of artists and genres – Ellie Goulding, Christina Aguilera, Bruno Mars, Dean Martin, Blues, Motown, Jazz… I could go on. I think growing up in a household that played an array of musical genres and artists helped me appreciate music, what it means to sing, to write… and the artists that inspired me are all legends that are dedicated to their craft. They have all shaped me to become the passionate, chameleon-like artist I am today.

Kat: You’ve been a semi-finalist in multiple competitions, and have worked with multi-platinum producer Roy Hamilton III(Britney Spears, Beyoncé, and Michael Jackson) and have collaborated with award-winning singer-songwriter Mat “Songsbury” Teofilo (Madonna, Miley Cyrus, and Diplo), as well as earned placements in MTV’s Ghosted and Siesta Key. What has been a highlight for you? What have you learned along the way? Do you have any advice for emerging artists?

Nix: I am so blessed to have had many accomplishments and mini milestones throughout my career, and I think the highlight has been the music I’ve come out with. I am so proud of the music I have created, and I’m incredibly honoured and humbled to have worked alongside notable producers and writers who helped bring the songs to life. My advice to emerging artists is to always put yourself out there and trust your gut.

Kat: How are you staying connected to your fans and the industry during Covid-19? What’s next?

Nix: Luckily we are all connected nowadays via this great thing called the internet! Instagram, Twitter and Facebook have been amazing platforms to stay connected with fans and also fellow songwriters and producers. I look forward to releasing another single after “Fools” and launching a merch store!
