You’ve been hitting the books hard, and you deserve a break. Fortunately, the powers that be found it in their infinite wisdom to impart an autumn break. So where are you planning to visit to relax from the rigors of academia?

Fall is the perfect time to travel. No matter where you are in the nation, you can find a plethora of stunning colors and a long list of things to do. Get your cameras ready and pack your bags — it’s time to hit the road. 

Lancaster, PA 

Are you seeking the best colors and the most delicious organic food? You can’t get any better than visiting the heart of PA Dutch country in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. You’ll find apple orchards with fruit ripe for the picking and roadside vegetable vendors aplenty. 

If you’re a fan of old-fashioned covered bridges, you’ll find ample film fodder throughout the countryside. Step back in time as you observe horse-drawn buggies and some of the most colorful foliage anywhere. You’ll find plentiful lodging on the cheap, and you can chow down on brats and sauerkraut at one of the area’s many German-inspired restaurants. 

Dearborn, MI

Are you a fan of all things automotive? Maybe you’re an engineering student interested in learning more about Henry Ford and his contributions to the field. Head to Greenfield Village, in Dearborn, Michigan, where you can explore the science that makes modern transportation possible. 

While you’re visiting, you can view a replica of the first engine Ford created in his kitchen sink way back in 1893. You can explore turn-of-the-century crafts like glassblowing and the printing press. Find larger-than-life inspiration at the giant screen experience.

Chebeague Island, ME 

What’s more picturesque than an island off the Maine coast? If you’re in the mood for romance — or simply want to score some great lighthouse shots — head to Chebeague Island.

Destin, FL 

Are you tired of nippy autumn winds already? Why not get yourself a tan before the snow falls by heading down to Destin, Florida? Known as the world’s luckiest fishing village, you’ll adore the town’s white-sand beaches and emerald waters. 

Temperatures average in the low 80s, so you’ll warm that chill right out of your bones. Take a deep-sea fishing excursion or kick back and watch the tide come in with a tall glass of Southern sweet tea in hand. 

Santa Fe, NM

When it’s growing colder in the Northeast, the desert Southwest comes alive with festivals celebrating everything from the arts to Native American culture. If you have an ecological mindset, you can’t miss the Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival, a giant shout-out to repurposing items into beautiful works of creativity. 

Snow sometimes comes early to the surrounding mountains, so bring your skis — and your suntan lotion. The blue skies go on forever, and you can catch quite a burn from the elevation. 

Hood River, OR 

If you’re the outdoor adventure type, you’ll discover no end of delightful things to do in Hood River, Oregon. You can unplug from your devices at one of the area’s many glamping resorts and bask in nature’s beauty.

If you haven’t experienced the breathtaking visual flame of yellow sycamore leaves contrasted against red rocks, you haven’t fully lived. Head to Sedona, Arizona, if you want to get in touch with your spiritual side this fall break. 

The town features several vortexes, areas of divine power that were sacred to Native Americans. Although the region is known for pricey resorts, you can find a host of inexpensive lodging at places like the Desert Quail Inn, located minutes from the Bell Rock vortex.
