The guy next door, with a deep rich voice, and a love of country – Originally from small-town Ontario, Cole now roams the prairies of Alberta, bringing an edgy country rock sound to all types of stages, from small-bush-partying festivals to the Calgary Stampede.
Winner of the top prize in the Rising Star contest for 96.5 CKFM Radio, and Calgary Stampede’s ‘Nashville North Star’ competition in 2015, Cole’s career sprung quickly, giving him the opportunity to perform at both the ‘Somewhere In Alberta’ Showcase and Royalty Records Showcase at Canadian Country Music Week (CCMA). His first single “Half The Bottle” (2016), with the support of Royalty Records, became an Alberta radio favorite and landed Cole an Alberta Country Music Association (ACMA) nomination for Artist of the Year, and Fan’s choice. This fueled various performances alongside notable artists such as The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Julian Austin, One More Girl and many more.
He lives by a simple approach, “Write music, sing your heart out and give 110% in everything you do.” This translates through his genuine personality and performance style witnessed by audiences worldwide.
After a small break to start a family, he is back to take 2018 by storm. With multiple singles lined up for release, many a-days spent in-studio preparing for his debut album, and bookings across Canada, including Calgary Stampede and Boots & Hearts, the name Cole Malone will continue to be heard more and more throughout the industry and in country-loving homes all over.
We had the opportunity to catch up with the rising star to talk songwriting, inspiration and what’s next.
Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your single ‘Next To Me’?
CM: Oh thats an easy one. I wrote this song for my wife, Courtney. Honestly, she does so many things for me and our family, and has been my # 1 supporter for years. I really wanted a song that fully encompasses everything that she does and everything that she is to me.
Kat: What is your songwriting process like?
CM: Usually, I start with playing on my guitar and seeing what inspiration comes out of it. Once I find a riff that speaks to me, I begin to focus on a melody that works with it, and try to find my way through the story of the song. A lot of the time, I will write a verse or two and revisit the song at a later date, or, if I am very lucky, the song will come together in one session; but it all usually stems from a guitar riff. The new single “Next to Me” was written within an hour, so it was one of those songs that just presented itself and I was lucky enough to catch it and put it on paper.
Kat: Could you speak a little on your musical idols or role models?
CM: Growing up, I think the first artist that really had my attention was Garth Brooks. I remember watching his world tour VHS over and over and was amazed by the show he put on. Around the same time, my parents brought me along to a party at their friends’ house and there was a guy playing his acoustic in their basement. Somehow, I ended up singing with him and we played “The River” over and over. That was when music first hooked me, and I have been chasing it ever since.
Kat: What’s on your playlist right now?
CM: I listen to a lot of different styles but I am currently listen to artists like Colter Wall, Dan Davidson, James Barker Band, The Trews, Eric Church, Metallica, and Brothers Osborne. I’m also a huge podcast guy, so I listen to a lot of those as well.
Kat: Have you ever been given any advice in regards to your music career that you felt you really connected with or made an impact?
CM: I think the biggest thing was to constantly keep working on every aspect of yourself and try to be better than you were yesterday. Things will never be handed to you so work your butt off because in the end, hard work pays off. I think another thing was to just be yourself because at the end of the day, with the billions of people in this world, there will only ever be ONE you, so just be you!
Kat: What can your fans expect from you next?
CM: Well I can tell you this, ‘Next to Me’ is just the beginning. I have lots of great music already written with plans to release music throughout 2018. I will also be hitting stages all over this amazing country of ours which includes major festivals, so there is lots coming up to be excited about.
