Kat Harlton

Canadian singer-songwriter Mathew V recently released his catchy new single “Sick” on May 27th via 604 Records and all streaming platforms. The new single is an infectious, upbeat track about the feelings of falling in love.

Aside from the excitement of the upcoming single release, Mathew also recently received his first JUNO Award nomination for Adult Contemporary Album of The Year for his fantastic EP, The Outer Circle.

Mathew’s emergence as one of Canada’s brightest, breakout talents has been slowly and methodically building over the past decade. With his 50 million career streams to date, over 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify and a loyal fan base, the JUNO nomination solidifies his place firmly as an artist to watch in 2022.

After 10 years of classical operatic vocal training, Mathew V made the move from Vancouver, Canada to London, England at only 17 years old, where he found his signature sound and followed his musical awakening before returning to Canada.

Since moving back, Mathew has accomplished a lot in his music career, including a deal with 604 Records, and reaching Top 40 on the Canadian Radio and Billboard Charts for 18 weeks for his debut single “Tell Me Smooth”. Mathew has collaborated with the likes of Dan Mangan, Shaun Frank, Fly by Midnight, Luca Fogale, Jocelyn Alice, and Raaban. He has also opened up for incredible acts such as Betty Who, Ria Mae, Hanson, Daya, and MAGIC.

Continuing to gain success, Mathew’s debut album “The Fifth” charted in both Canada and the US with both of his albums earning critical acclaim from press outlets such as Nylon and Billboard. Following placements on shows such as Love Island, Mathew has charted Top 50 on Shazam in over 72 cities.

Mathew is currently in the studio putting finishing touches on more new songs to come, pushing his creative boundaries, and setting his sights on new career highs, which we had the opportunity to chat with him about.

Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your new single “Sick”?

Mathew: “Sick” is a tongue in cheek play on the phrase “you make me sick.” I wanted to give a pretty harsh delivery to contrast the beautiful feeling of butterflies. My favourite type of sick is lovesick.

Kat: What do you hope fans take from the new song?

Mathew: I hope that they sing it in their car. This feels like a really fun summer song and I hope it helps people escape and make some fun memories.

Kat: What do you find is the most challenging part of your creative process?

Mathew: Writers block for sure. I’ve written over 150 songs this year and I think that it has  been a challenge to keep things new and to keep pushing myself forward. However, I’m learning ways to give myself a refresh and get right back to it.

Kat: What has been a career highlight for you so far? What have you learned along the  way?

Mathew: I think being able to work with artists that I’m such a fan of has been the coolest part of music for me. There is nothing better than learning from and surrounding myself with people who I immensely respect.

Kat: Can you talk about how it feels to be nominated for a JUNO Award for Adult  Contemporary Album of The Year for your EP ‘The Outer Circle’?

Mathew: It is such a bucket list moment for me. I never would have imagined this would happen, especially so early in my career, and it is just such an honour.

Kat: What can we expect from you for the balance of 2022?

Mathew: I’m working on a very exciting new project over the summer that should start to  show itself at the end of the year. I’ll also be playing the historic Massey Hall with Royal Wood this upcoming October.
