Alternative rock’s ever-evolving chameleon K.Flay, recently released her new EP “Outside Voices“.
Her near-undefinable combination of dark-electro soundscapes, art-pop sensibilities, spitfire rhymes, industrial rock backbone and versatile vocals has led the songwriter/artist/multi-instrumentalist to two GRAMMY nominations (Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical for ‘Every Where Is Some Where’, and Best Rock Song for “Blood in the Cut”), tours alongside Grouplove, Imagine Dragons & Thirty Seconds To Mars, and festival appearances at ACL Fest, Bonnaroo, Coachella, Treefort, and Riot Fest.
In addition to her ‘Inside Voices’ EP, she also recently dropped the three-song cover collection ‘Don’t Judge A Song By Its Cover’ that included off-the-wall remakes of songs by Limp Bizkit, The Offspring & Green Day, and appeared on songs by Arkells and Jax Anderson.
K.Flay’s ‘Inside Voices’ EP dropped earlier this year featuring guest appearances by Travis Barker & Tom Morello.
We had the opportunity to chat with K.Flay about her new EP, her creative process, and what we can expect from her Grey Cup halftime performance with the Arkells.
Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your latest EP “Outside Voices”?
K.Flay: I was thinking a lot about my conscience, my superego. the introspective part of my brain. outside voices is a response to inside voices, the EP i released this summer. together, they create side A and side B of a full record that’s an examination of the extreme parts of ourselves. every song on outside voices is me trying to thoughtfully reckon with a painful feeling, whether that’s heartbreak, overwhelm, shame, ostracism.
Kat: What do you hope fans connect with on the album?
K.Flay: a sense of hope, I think, and a feeling that we’re always changing, our perspective is always changing. and that’s a beautiful thing.
Kat: What do you find is the most challenging part of your creative process? What was most challenging about this project?
K.Flay: Deciding that a song is FINISHED. I tend towards revisions, tinkering, experimentation — so I often find it difficult to know when something is done. almost always, it’s that I’ve hit the very very final deadline and I have to throw up my hands and call it finished. For outside voices, I found song selection to be a challenge. There were a lot of potential EP tracks and I was searching for the right balance of tone, tempo, and energy.
Kat: You’ll be joining The Arkells for The Grey Cup halftime performance. What does that mean to you? Any hints on what we can expect?
K.Flay: It’s really just an honor to be up there with them. I can’t wait. Tt’s been such a cool journey since Max and I first connected like 4 years ago. I never thought that i’d be joining them for the GreyCup halftime show…
Kat: What are you looking forward to for 2022?
K.Flay: I’m touring Feb-May, so I’m really looking forward to that. I’ve got a headline run in the US and Canada booked first and I’m working on something different and special for that tour. Really pushing myself in terms of the performance and linking the show back to these EPs, and the voices in our heads.
