Wendake, QC based artist ANYMA, recently released her new single and official music video for If God Had A Boat on June 18 via all streaming platforms.
Born and raised in Wendake, QC, First Nations artist ANYMA was encouraged to pursue a path of creative exploration by her dancer and choreographer mother, and father who was a musician, producer, and the cultural chief of their community. Taking inspiration from her parents, she discovered her love for music and was introduced to the stage through her father’s professional production of “Ozalik” which actively ran for five years in Quebec.
We had the opportunity to chat with ANYMA about her latest single, having the courage to pursue her dreams, and what’s next.
Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your latest single “If God Had A Boat”?
ANYMA: When I wrote this song, I was at the darkest place I had ever been in my life. The need of leaving town, leaving earth in other words. I had to be totally honest with myself and state in my lyrics that I was not “ok”. So, opening up to myself, letting my vulnerability write down the lyrics and my emotions. Once I got to the chorus, a force came to me in a way, where I told myself, I do not want to let myself sink in those sad and dark emotions, I wanted to heal from all of this. When you don’t know where to go anymore, you’ve seen too much and you’re sick of being strong, but there is this force inside to pick yourself back up, in whatever moment, whenever you need a hand you have this force inside. To not let go of life, to pursue our dreams no matter what. The courage of a mother giving her life for her children, the courage of earth giving herself everyday for humans, the courage of speaking up for yourself and showing up in front of the world. I wanted to be that brave. This was what inspired me.
Kat: What do you hope fans take from the single?
ANYMA: My strongest hope is that whenever they feel lost, they can listen to this song. Feel that they are not alone in this journey of being human. That I am with them, I want them to have courage and faith that if they continue to heal, and pursue their journey as warriors, this force inside will awake and bring in all the joy and love this world has to offer. Because when you are truly aligned with your dreams and you listen to your heart, everything is possible.
Kat: What do you find is the most challenging part of your creative process?
ANYMA: Discipline. To show up every day and practice to get better.
Kat: What has been a career highlight for you so far?
ANYMA: I have been hired for the Quebec Circus: Flip Fabrique as the signer of their show. So grateful!
Kat: What’s next?
ANYMA: A great journey is ahead, this is just the start. I will pursue music, take my human experience and emotions to write songs, get better every day at singing and heal my soul the best I can so that when I am on stage I can give this healing through my voice.
