Actor, filmmaker, singer, songwriter, and record producer Andre Colquhoun recently released his debut 4 track R&B/Soul EP “Short Term“, a project about finding his true love and identity.
We had the opportunity to chat with Andre about songwriting, his debut EP and how he’s staying connected.
Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your debut 4 track R&B/Soul EP called “Short Term”?
Andre: Music has always been a part of my life and I wanted to use my God-given gifts. For this EP, I wanted things to be simplistic and experimental. Something to soothe the mind. It’s basically pieces of reality expressed through song.
Kat: As well as being an R&B/Soul artist, you’re also an actor and filmmaker. You recently released a 10 minute music video for all the songs on your debut EP, can you talk about the concept behind the music video, and what you hope audiences take away from it?
Andre: Love and identity play a strong role in the music video as well as a lot of other components. I want audiences to watch and come up with their own meaning.
Kat: Can you talk about your writing process, and why you thought these tracks best represented you as an artist?
Andre: Going into the writing, I wanted things to be simplistic. Almost repetitive sounding. When listening to all four songs, you’ll notice they’re not your average lyrical song, but rather a sort of nursery rhyme. To get the ball rolling, I start with my go-to instrument, the piano. I play until I find something that connects with me. After, I start singing gibberish until actual words come out. The words that come out aren’t false, but come from the heart.
Kat: Can you talk about your musical influences, and who you look to for inspiration, or as role models?
Andre: Growing up hasn’t always been easy, but it hasn’t always been gloom and doom. Whenever there was a slight moment of negativity, my parents would always put on Gospel music and anytime the music would start, I would get up and start dancing and singing. The music truly influenced me. As I grew older, I started to discover more styles of music. R&B, Pop, Hip Hop etc. My role models would have to be my parents.
Kat: How are you staying connected to your fans and the industry during Covid-19? What’s next?
Andre: Mailing physical letters. That’s a lie. Definitely social media. As much as I dislike social media, it’s still important. Socializing face to face will always be number one, but I give credit where credit is due and social media has definitely helped me to stay connected with a lot of people. As for what’s next, lots of music, film, and TV! I’m grateful for being able to do what I love and I’m constantly excited.
