Toronto electro-pop artist Aiden Myers recently released his single “Alone Tonight“, as the lead track from his upcoming debut album Overthinking. The release sets the tone for Myer’s upcoming project — vulnerable, reflective, yet highly danceable. “Alone Tonight” explores the agonizing pain of being in a relationship with someone who elicits games and refuses to open themselves up to the vulnerability of love & commitment. Opening with soft synths and building into smooth beats, Myers desperate vocals sets a soundscape that’s home to any anguished heart.
Myer’s newest track follows a handful of independently released singles and features, which has amassed over 2 million streams across platforms. Setting lo-fi electro-pop flourishes against a backdrop of deep, vibey R&B beats, bumpy drops and weighty, autobiographical lyrics that explore the varied nuances of human emotion, Myers delivers songs that are at tender and agonizing, yet decidedly hopeful.
We had the opportunity to chat with Aiden about his new single, who he’d love to collaborate with and what’s next.
Kat: Can you talk about the inspiration behind your latest single “Alone Tonight”?
Aiden: Of course! Alone Tonight is my story of a toxic relationship I was going through. It tells the story of a girl who was too afraid to admit her feelings and translated in to her just using me and only showing up when she needed something. I knew in my heart she had feelings and was just too scared to open up.
Kat: Can you talk about your songwriting process, does it differ from song to song?
Aiden: When it comes to songwriting it always starts with a concept or a melody I hear in my head. Ill then take that concept and construct a song out of it either on guitar or piano. At that point I’ll know if i want to record it or not.
Kat: You’ve collaborated with the likes of Billboard charting artist Kayla Diamond (Slaight Music), as well as acclaimed producers such as Tokyo Spiers (Walk Off The Earth), MKSTN, Joel Stouffer (Serena Ryder, Dragonette), and Giordan Postorino (Karl Wolf, JRDN). What have you learned from those experiences?
Aiden: Wow so much! I love collaborating because you can learn so much from other people and really grow as a persona and artist. One main thing I’ve learnt is to just trust the process and not overthink things. You can get so stuck on ideas sometimes but if you just go with the flow of things, the pieces usually fall into place.
Kat: Is there an artist you’d like to perform with, that you haven’t had the chance to yet. Or a song you would love to do a cover of?
Aiden: Oh there’s many! But one in particular would be either Bazzi or the 1975 two of my favorite artists in the world! And cover wise I used to do them all the time and still do every now and again. It’s usually when a song comes out and I really connect to it I’ll do a quick cover and throw it up on Instagram!
Kat: What’s next?
Aiden: Next I’ll be rolling out the next single in line with the EP March 20th and playing shows around Toronto one of which will be march 31st at Supermarket!
