The Top 9 Movies That Are Perfect for Date Night, And Why

Going out on the town is great, but you can still enjoy an exciting date night from the comfort of your living room. You won’t drop a small fortune on popcorn – a definite plus – and you can watch your choice of movie as well. No waiting in line for something you’re unsure about.

So what should you see? What movies will be a surefire hit with your SO? Whether you love sci-fi or romance, comedy or action, the films below will make your next date night something to remember.

1. Snowpiercer

If you’re a fan of flicks that involve “fighting the man” with a dystopian twist, you’ll love this film. Based on a French graphic novel, the movie depicts humankind’s last stand against global warming. When the plan backfires – plunging the world into another ice age – survivors cluster upon a high-speed train.

The situation soon descends into a battle between the huddled masses surviving on scraps of protein bars in the back while the elite enjoy every comfort toward the front. It’s a timely allegory if ever one existed, and this film will delight sci-fi fans and environmentalists alike. If you’re the sort who jives with dates by discussing heavy issues, you’ll enjoy Snowpiercer.

2. Star Wars: A New Hope

Name a sci-fi fan who doesn’t love “Star Wars” — I’ll wait. Who can forget the trash compactor scene where Princess Leia nearly meets her untimely end?

The graphics were so advanced when the movie was released in 1977 that the escape from the Death Star still rivets audiences today. Talk like Yoda, you will, by the end of the film.

3. The Wedding Singer

If you and your SO dig an unmistakably 80s soundtrack with your entertainment, “The Wedding Singer” is your flick. The film stars Adam Sandler in one of his best roles and features a cameo appearance by none other than the inimitable Billy Idol.

4. The Princess Bride

“As you wish!”

If your love would lead you to battle rodents of unusual size or brave the dreaded Fire Swamp, you’ll love this romantic comedy. Featuring stars like Mandy Patinkin and Andre the Giant — who is larger-than-life in his role as Fezzik — you’ll quote lines from this classic to each other for weeks afterward.

5. The Silence of the Lambs

If you thought a psychotic mass murderer couldn’t be charming, you haven’t seen Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of Dr. Hannibal Lecter in this suspense thriller.

When a sociopath begins crafting a female suit out of real women, FBI agent-in-training Clarice Starling interviews the doctor, asking for his help. The chemistry between them sizzles onscreen even though they never share more than a fleeting touch. While gruesome, Dr. Lecter’s thrilling escape from the authorities leaves you cheering, albeit a bit sheepishly.

6. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Want some gore so realistic, your partner will bury their head in your shoulder? The original “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” combines the “don’t do drugs or have sex or else” fun of ’70s slasher flicks with the sobering reality the film was based upon — the real-life exploits of serial killer Ed Gein.

Check all the locks on your windows and doors, turn down the lights and snuggle up.

7. When Harry Met Sally

You’re likely familiar with the infamous diner scene from this all-time classic. If not, you’re in for a ride if you and your SO are watching “When Harry Met Sally” for the first time.

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan prove that, yes, men and women can be friends. Or can they? No spoilers, but the ending will make you cheer, and laugh, and rethink your opinion on intergender friendships.

8. Happy Gilmore

You don’t have to love golf to laugh until you cry at this Adam Sandler classic. There’s something so endearing about this loveable washed-up hockey player who’ll do anything — even hit the links — to save his beloved grandma’s home.

Afterwards you’ll want to listen to “Endless Love,” so have your iPhone docked and ready.

9. A Dog’s Purpose

Fellas, how many times have you heard the advice to try dog walking if you want to meet women? Something about the love people share with their canine companions is so pure, even devoted cat people will adore this film. Bring plenty of tissues — this flick reaches tearjerker status for sure.
