Here Come The Mummies Talk Rumors, Songwriting And What’s Next

Kat Harlton

Here Come the Mummies is an eight-piece funk-rock band of 5000 year-old Egyptian Mummies with a one-track mind. Their “Terrifying Funk from Beyond the Grave” is sure to get you into them (and possibly vice versa).

Some say they were cursed after deflowering a great Pharaoh’s daughter. Others claim they are reincarnated Grammy-Winning studio musicians. Regardless, HCTM’s mysterious personas, cunning song-craft, and unrelenting live show will bend your brain, and melt your face. Get ready, for Here Come The Mummies.

We had the opportunity to catch up with a couple of the mummies to talk rumors, songwriting and what’s next.

Kat: It’s rumored that some of the band members are GRAMMY Award winners. Without giving anything away, are you able to talk about how the group came to together, and where the idea for the group came from?

Mummy Cass: As to the rumor, I can’t confirm, but can’t totally deny either. We came together as mere mortals in ancient Egypt, playing weddings and parties and stuff. We got cursed to wander the Earth forever baby, for an indiscretion, or two – or three – with the Pharaoh’s daughter. So that was our brilliant idea.

Midnight: Brilliant.

Kat: With such a large group, how does the songwriting and song creation process work?

Mummy Cass: To the untrained observer it would look and sound like pure chaos, but we ping-pong ideas off each other all day long. Sometimes we start with just a doorknob, then make a house to go with it.

Midnight: Mostly all the good ideas come from Spaz, tho.

Kat: HCTM has been direct support for P-Funk, Al Green, Mavis Staples, KC and the Sunshine Band, and Cheap Trick, and have rocked Super Bowl Village, as well as many large festivals. Are you surprised at all by the success? Did you think HCTM would be this successful from the start?

Mummy Cass: Success was never our goal, but when you are having fun like we are, and when you are as sexy and funky as we are, it’s infectious, and next thing you know- bam!.. we’re in Toronto!

Midnight: It’s a place we have always dreamed of playing and we’re fans of some of your various legal provisions… Dude, 16:20.

Kat: Who would you say are HCTM’s musical influences or inspiration? Was the idea to always be a ‘funk’ band from the beginning or did it just happen naturally?

Mummy Cass: We love all kinds of music from Sly and the Family Stone, and Ohio Players, to Franz Schubert, but we have a knack for funk maybe because we are genuinely FUNKY. You know, like a little rotten, and a little moldy, and a little stinky.

Midnight: Okay a lot.

Kat: What’s next? New music? Tour?

Mummy Cass: Baby, there is always something in the pipeline. We’re always writing and recording new stuff, It’s just a matter of time before some squirts out into the world. We will be on the road until Willie Nelson and Paul McCartney call it quits. Also, we’re working on an all-cranberry recipe calendar.
