Who is Natalie Kulesza?
I’m so proud to say I was born and raised in Toronto, which in this industry usually gets a few “WHAT?! REally?…” I’m an actor who can’t believe the talent that surrounds me every day. Passionate about self-development and wearing a helmet while I ride my bike (I embrace the helmet hair, especially when I’m sporting bangs). Passionate about GOOD food.
What I do is never enough & depending on the day this can be my best friend or worst enemy. I want to give back as much as I take. I have aspirations of working with passionate people in film and theatre, and getting my driver’s license.
Tell me about your role in ‘Some Girl(s)…’
I play Lindsay in Some Girl(s). She is a challenging role and
I want to honor her and her story. The scene that unfolds between her and Guy is a beautiful balance of simplicity and intricacy because of the past they shared. She is not just angry as many could easily read off the page. LaBute has carefully crafted a truthful reaction of a woman being hurt and coming to face the executor.
What’s it like playing Lindsay compared to other roles you’ve had?
100% different. It’s always a different experience wth each project. That’s the beauty of it.
Do you feel her character is an accurate or realistic interpretation of women?
I feel LaBute wrote Lindsay as a realistic woman.
Where did the idea for “Do 1 Thing” come from? What’s it about? What’s its goal?
Do 1 Thing I totally stole from my friend Heather. She did this same project about 2 years ago and it was such a turning point for her in her career as an artist. It scared the shit out of me to make myself that accountable for my journey. I have huge issues with discipline and I felt this project would not only help me address them but give myself a reason to really dissect my choices and start coming to some conclusions as to what I truly want in my life. So the blog has created work for me as an actor, it also has turned into some sort of self help-y kind of platform as well. I’m thankful that at the end of the day, if anything, I have the blog to bring back some focus onto my goals.
Has ‘ Do 1 Thing’ actively helped your acting career? Do you suggest others do it?
YES it has. Every single day I reflect on my relationship to my career and what it truly means to me in the moment. It’s like an online journal which has been amazing as I feel like I have created some sort of forum for other people and conversations. (grammar?..OY!) I think if you think of dong something like this and it scares the shit out of you, like it did for me me, than YES-do it. Otherwise just find something that freaks you out and makes you feel vulnerable and do that. That’s what is was truly about.
How long are you going to do it for? Or do you have any plans to use it as inspiration for something else?
I am doing it for 365 days straight. Although, I did miss a few days, I think 1 for sickness and 1 because of a wedding, but I will just write posts until I have 365. I actually do have intentions of creating some sort of radio program based on my blog. That idea is just a baby at this point.
What’s next for Natalie? As an actor or otherwise?
That is a great question. When you find out, let me know…. hahaha! But seriously, the Fringe is just around the corner and I am helping a friend produce a show, as well as working at the Factory Theatre bar. Come say hi! I hope the summer will be filled lots of writing. I’d love to start a new project for the web or film, finish reading my newest self-help book (they are my crack), pay off my debt and do lots of yoga outside…. and drink my weight in Sangria of course! It’s all about balance Kat! My theme for the year is DISCIPLINE. So I plan on exploring that as much as possible!!!
If there was 1 thing you’ve always wanted to scream or get out to the masses, what would it be?
This is hardest question I have ever been asked in my life…..
hhhmmmmm… I feel it would go along the lines of: “HEY EVERYONE! WE ALL KNOW THAT WE’LL DIE ONE DAY RIGHT? RIGHT! SO LET’S TALK ABOUT HOW WE REALLY WANT TO DO THIS, AS IN LIVE!!!! I’LL BRING THE COOKIES AND RED VINO!!!!”
That’s today. If you ask me tomorrow it will probably be way cooler and articulate.
