As part of Canadian Music Week 2016, I had the opportunity on Saturday night to check out Ottawa’s Zoo Legacy at The Cave above Lee’s Palace.  This was my second time seeing the band and I wanted to know if they could bring the same level of intensity to their performance that I had seen in the past and they did not disappoint.

Front man/rapper Nick Pouponneau was charismatic and definitely brought with him a level of energy that a lot of bands lack these days. Backed by multi-instrumentalists Mark MilloyDominic and Samuel Goss, they performed a passionate half hour set of older material, along with a wicked cover of Major Lazer‘s Lean On, and some new unreleased songs as well.

It would be difficult to pin down the band exactly, but they reference GorillazM.I.A., and Kid Cudi as artists with a similar sound, and I think this is an accurate assessment. It was also pretty clear based on their performance that this a band who wants it, and are dedicated to their craft. They’ve already been on Much Music and have shared the stage with some amazing artists, so I expect to see a lot more of this band in the coming months.
